Unless they have PageRank! Most of the people forget this main thing, they think getting a backlink from .edu or .gov domain name is just enough for them to get good rankings, but they should have good link authority and they should be linked by reputed sources. You would have seen so much of services online providing .edu and .gov backlinks, but the trick is, you’ll have backlinks from .edu and .gov websites which doesn’t have good PageRank, so in the end you pay for almost nothing.

Recently I across this post from Digital Inspiration and thought of sharing this with you. Matt Cutts (Head of webspam at Google) said:

Websites “don’t get any PageRank boost from having an .edu link or .gov link automatically. If you get an .edu link and no one is linking to that .edu page, you’re not going to get any PageRank at all because that .edu page doesn’t have any PageRank.”

John Mueller (Google Switzerland) also added the statement saying Google will “generally treat all links the same – be it from .gov or .edu or .info sites.”

So next time, when you are building .edu and .gov backlinks, do see their link authority and PageRank.

Downtime is such a hard word for Bloggers and Webmasters. We fear it next to those Panda and Penguin updates. But do you know a site’s downtime could affect its ranking? We are going to discuss this issue from Google’s view, like how they consider a site’s downtime for its ranking. Because you might have downtime for 10 minutes, 30 minutes or even for a week sometimes.

Your Website’s Downtime and Ranking

So when Google crawls a webpage and its current status is unavailable (downtime), it will have two scenarios then. Like whether your site will eventually appear soon or if your site is gone forever.

#1 – If your site is down for some minutes or maximum a day or two.

If this is the case then Google might not harm your site in any way because they can understand it as a normal downtime caused on most of the blogs. So Google crawls again, and if your site is up then the rankings will be normal, nothing touched.

#2 – If your site is down for several days, a week or a month.

But due to some laziness or some inactivity, your site might be down for some weeks or even months. At this point Google has no other option then to drop it from the search results at least until they can fetch again, find it, index it and then return it, just like good old days.

USEFUL: Be The First To Know When Your Site/Blog Is Down

Below you can see how Matt Cutts handles this question, just like the we explained above.

Earlier we told you why you should use suPHP on your server for better Security. Now we’ll tell you how to verify whether they are using it or not. Well you can simply ask your Hosting Support for that, but we can also know this simple tip too.

To verify whether your server is using suPHP or not, create a simple ‘php info’ script. Create a file named ‘phpinfo.php’ in the public_html folder of your site and insert the following code:

<?php
phpinfo();
?>

Now you need to load the file in your browser and in the top section find the line ‘Server API‘.

If it shows ‘CGI‘ then your account is on a server with suPHP.

If it shows ‘apache‘ then you are NOT on a suPHP server.

With this information you can know the servers normally have PHP running as CGI (not Apache).

(Tip via HostGator Support Portal)

We all know the sad story about Google Apps (Hey wait! You know about Posterous’s story too right?) and I can see so much of eager faces to know the best alternative for it. We are quite lucky to get support from none other than Microsoft and their awesome mail platform – OutLook.com. So if you need a custom email address like pradeep@hostlater.com, yes something like yourname@yourblog.com or any format you like, then you can easily do that with the help of OutLook. Here in this guide I’ll tell you how to proceed.

#1 Go to Windows Live Admin Center. Here you can manage and customise Microsoft Services, here we are going to use OutLook. After setting up your domain name, you can create user accounts, customise the look, and you can enjoy full features. Click the “Get Started” link to proceed.

#2 Now here you need to enter your domain name. For example, spradeep.com. Now choose the mail service for your domain name. Select the option “Set up OutLook.com for my domain” and click the button “Continue”.

#3 Now you need to assign a domain administrator. You can either sign in using your existing Microsoft Account or you can create one and sign in. Since I already have one I’m using that, if you don’t have one you can create it easily.

#4 In the next screenshot you can see this. After confirming the details, click on the button “I Accept”.

#5 Now that’s all. Things are perfect! Now what you need to do is, update some records in your DNS Manager. If your domain registrar allows DNS management, then you can do these there or else, you can do this in your hosting account. Just copy the things on the screen to be done, now send a request to your hosting account (Support team) to do them. Simple. It will be quite tedious for us to update these records one by one, you can request the support team to do these for you instead.

That’s it. Now you can go to your Account settings and create User accounts. Enjoy OutLook! Do let us know in comments if you face any issues. Thanks.

WordPress.com is a blog web hosting service provider owned by Automattic, and powered by the open source WordPress software.

First you need to backup your Posterous Spaces. I explained it clearly on this tutorial. Refer that. After downloading the backup, just open the ZIP file. It contains all your images, audio, and video files.

They also have the directory containing a web page for each of your posts. It includes a file named wordpress_export_1.xml (Posterous XML file). You’ll use this file to import into WordPress.com.

Signup or Log Into WordPress.com

If you don’t have a WordPress.com then sign up for one. If you already have one account, just log into it. Go to your Dashboard, then “Tools” -> “Import”. Now from the list of Blogging services, select “Posterous”. By this you can Import posts, comments, images, video, and categories from a Posterous export file.

Now just upload your Posterous XML file and we’ll import the posts, comments, categories, images, and video into this site.

That’s all. After the import all your content (includes images, posts, comments, etc) to WordPress.com blog. Welcome to WordPress.

This is really unfortunate. Posterous is a simple blogging platform started in May 2008, later acquired by Twitter in March 2012. Its simple interface to blog about things you like/admire made it popular within a short period of time.

Sachin Agarwal said that their full focus will be on Twitter, so they’ll be completely shutting down Posterous on April 30th. That means, you can neither view nor edit your content. That’s it!

How to Backup Your Posterous Space?

Since we got less time (April 30th deadline) we can backup our Posterous Spaces now and work on our new Blogging space right now to avoid SEO effects. Fortunately there is a simple backup option will help you to get a zip archive of your spaces. It’ll be delivered to your email. If you visit that backup link, you’ll come to a place like this where you can find the ‘backup’ option for all your Posterous Spaces.

You need to click the “Request Backup” button to generate the backup. This backup process won’t affect your Space. Also this backup will only include your current content, you need to take another backup if you make any changes to your content or if you get any new comments.

Depending upon the size of your content the backup time varies. They’ll mail you the backup when it is ready to download.

That’s all you’ll get a mail with your backup content ZIP archive. I know it hurts, but we need to find some other good Blogging space now. Questions rises whether they are shutting down because of Twitter or because of Posterous co-founder Garry Tan’s new site “Posthaven”. You can operate your blog there for $5 a month.

Even I was not aware about this term few months back, then I actually start to use this on our servers. suPHP is a tool for executing PHP scripts with the permissions of their owners. It consists of an Apache module (mod_suphp) and a setuid root binary (suphp) that is called by the Apache module to change the uid of the process executing the PHP interpreter. suPHP is nothing but Secure PHP, so thus confirms this will be secure than normal PHP.

According to WordPress, it is one of the recommended security measures..

Hosting is more secure when PHP applications, like WordPress, are run using your account’s username instead of the server’s default shared username. The most common way nowadays for hosting companies to do this is using suPHP. Just ask your potential host if they run suPHP or something similar.

Using suPHP the file permissions can be set more securely, you can still being able to execute scripts on your site. In the suPHP environment, cPanel user name will have the needed permissions to read, write, and execute all the files.

If suPHP is enabled on the server then the PHP scripts will be running under the ownership of the account user. You can ask your Web Hosting whether they have the capacity to run suPHP, if yes, then you can enable it. Also do ask them whether you’ll have any drawbacks (just in case). You can also verify whether your Server is using suPHP or not.

The power of the internet is overwhelming; the internet has consistently outgrown itself from year to year. Everybody, every brand, every businesses are going online to tap into the vast traffic and huge market share that exist online.

Those online businesses can only function effectively if they individually have a web address – a domain name. A domain name is a unique identifier that is entered into the URL or address bar of a web browser that directs users to any desired website of their choice.

You want to start an online business – and you’re wondering how to get a “.edu” domain name? Have you being wondering how they register “.edu” domain names?

Well, EduCause.edu is a non-profit organization which handles all “.edu” registration. Unlike “.com”; “.net”; “.org” which all has numerous registrars; the sole accreditation of “.edu” registration is only awarded to one organization – Educause.edu.

You want to know how you can get a unique “.edu” domain name with them? Make sure your institution meets all the eligibility requirements.

Below is a simple way to register “.edu” domain name with EduCaus.edu–

1. From your web browser, go to EduCause.edu and click on the “Request a New Domain” link situated at the top-most part of the website.

2. Now, from the newly opened page- scroll down to the far end of the website and input the .edu domain name of your choice in the search bar just after “.edu Domain Name Availability Lookup”. After writing down your desired domain name – click on “Check Domain”.

3. The next page that will come up will determine whether the domain you chose in step two is available or not. If the .edu domain name isn’t available – you would be required to input another domain name and click on “Check Domain” again.

If the domain name is available – you will be taken to another page called “Domain availability results”.

4. Still on the new page – scroll down to the end of the page and click on “Request This Domain”.

But before you click on it, there is some important information you have to understand, which they’ll need you to fill on the next page after you click on “Request This Domain” button.

Below is some of the important information you will need to get yourself aquatinted with before you proceed:

Institution Name

This is the legal name and address of the group or institution requesting to get the .edu domain name. The institution must have a legal name and must be affiliated to one of the accredited agencies that EduCause has given the right to give out “.edu” domain names.

Password

You will need to set an initial password that you’ll use in creating and managing your .edu domain name.

Administrative Contact

This is the name of the person or group who is responsible for the administrative details of the “.edu” domain name.

Technical Contact

This is the name of the person or group that is responsible for the technical details of the domain name.

Billing Contact

This is the name of the person or group who responsible for the billing on the domain name.

Primary And Secondary Domain Name Servers

You’ll have to direct your domain to your website. The name servers should be set appropriately so that it will respond to queries from your domain name.

5. Having read the above, click on “Request Domain Name” and continue with the domain name registration.

6. Input the institution name, state and address for the “.edu” domain and click on “search”.
The post-secondary institution that you’re affiliated with must be a verified and accredited agency of the U.S Department of Education. If your agency isn’t listed when your “search” queries returns – it means, you cannot create a “.edu” domain name.

If the list returns with your agency’s name on the search query – click on the institution’s name.

7. You’ll be prompted to create a password for the domain name. Enter the password of your choice and click on “Next”.

8. Just as I have being able to explain above – you’ll be asked to enter the name of an “administration contact”; “Technical contact”; and “Billing contact” – I have explained them above.

9. Enter the appropriate details of your Primary and Secondary Domain Name Servers (DNS). Contact the hosting company you’re currently using – so that they can help you out with the proper settings.

10. When you’re through, a verification email will be sent to you to confirm the activation of your “.edu” domain. EduCause.edu will review and go through your application to see whether you or your group are competent enough to get approved or not. You may likely get a reply from EduCause.edu after 1 week of registration.

Following the above steps will make it much easier to register a ”.edu” domain name from the internet.
