How to Point Namecheap Domain Name to HostGator Hosting
Namecheap is one of the top and cheapest domain name registrars. If you’ve registered your domain name from Namecheap, you’ve taken the right decision. I use and recommend Namecheap for registering a domain name.
But when it comes to web hosting, I don’t recommend Namecheap. It’s always a good idea to buy hosting from top hosting providers like HostGator.
Yes, it’s possible to host Namecheap domain name on HostGator. Infect, I recommend buying domain and web hosting separately. It’s good for security. It also makes transferring host account easier. And you can save some money. Host providers usually charge more money than domain registrar while renewing.
In this post, I will show you how to point Namecheap domain name to HostGator.
How to Point Namecheap Domain to HostGator
Connecting Namecheap domain name to HostGator is very easy. Just follow these simple steps.
Step 1: Sign Up for HostGator
If you already own a HostGator hosting account, you can skip this step.
Otherwise, you need to buy a hosting package from HostGator. HostGator offers different types of hosts like Shared hosting, WordPress hosting, Cloud hosting, VPS hosting etc. Shared hosting is the best plan to get started with. You can upgrade your hosting account whenever you want to do. So I’d recommend you to start with shared hosting and change the hosting later when needed. It will save money of you.
HostGator Shared Hosting offers 3 plans – Hatchling, Baby and Business. The only difference between Hatchling and Baby plan is, Hatchling plan allows you host single domain where you can host unlimited domains on Baby plan.
I prefer Baby plan as it offers unlimited domains hosting.
However, you can get started with HostGator for only $0.01!. Just use the coupon code HL1CENTHOSTING and get the first month hosting for only one cent. If you want to buy hosting for a longer period then use this Coupon code HL25OFFHOSTING to get 25% discount.
Step 2: Get HostGator Nameservers
A nameserver is a special server owned by a web host that allows you to link your domain name with web hosting.
To link your Namecheap domain to HostGator, you need to get your HostGator Nameservers.
You can find your HostGator nameservers in your welcome email from HostGator. You can also get it from your cPanel. Most of the time your cPanel login link will be http://yourdomain.com/cpanel. Once you’ve logged in to your cPanel, you will find the nameservers on the bottom left.
Keep this tab opened to set the nameservers to Namecheap
Step 3: Set HostGator Nameservers on Namecheap
Now login to Namecheap.com and click on “MANAGE” button beside the domain name.
On the next page, you have to enter HostGator nameservers. Navigate to Nameservers section and select “Custom DNS”.
Then enter HostGator nameservers instead of Namecheap default namerservers and click on Tick mark.
Your domain will be pointed to HostGator web hosting. However, it may take some time for the nameservers to propagate.
Step 4: Add Namecheap Domain to HostGator
The primary domain that you’ve entered while signing up to HostGator will be added automatically. So you don’t need to add that domain again and you can skip this step.
Otherwise, you have to add the domain name. Just login to your HostGator cPanel and navigate to “Domains”. Then click on “Addon Domains”.
On the next page, enter domain name & password and click on “Add Domain”.
Your domain will be added. And you are done.
