Your first hosting bill was cheap. Then the renewal email came, and the price jumped by 2 to 6 times. This guide shows you 9 simple ways to cut your web hosting renewal price, with real numbers we checked in October 2026.
Quick answer
The fastest way to lower your web hosting renewal price is to check the renewal rate before you buy, then lock in the longest term you are sure about. At renewal time, ask your host for a discount, drop add-ons you do not use, and downgrade if you do not need your plan. If the price is still too high, move to a host with a price lock (like InterServer) or to a free deployment platform (like Netlify’s $0 plan) if your site is static.
Web hosting renewal prices compared (checked October 2026)
Here is what the entry plans cost on day one, and what they cost after the first term. We took these numbers from each company’s official pricing page on October 28, 2026.
| Host (entry plan) | Best for | First-term price | Renewal price | Refund window |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Namecheap (Stellar) | Lowest renewal on a small site | $22.88 for year 1 ($1.98/mo) | $44.88/yr | 30 days |
| Bluehost (Starter) | Beginners on WordPress | $3.99/mo (36 months) | $9.99/mo | 30 days |
| Hostinger (Premium) | Lowest day-one price | $2.49/mo (48 months) | $10.99/mo | 30 days |
| DreamHost (Launch) | Simple yearly billing | $2.89/mo (1 year) | $10.99/mo | 30 days (per its terms) |
| SiteGround (StartUp) | Strong support and speed | $2.99/mo (12 months) | $17.99/mo | 30 days |
| InterServer (shared) | Price lock, no renewal jump | Locked price for the life of the account | Same as sign-up price | 30 days |
| Cloudways (DigitalOcean) | Growing sites, no long contract | $11/mo, billed hourly | $11/mo (no promo jump) | 3-day free trial |
| Netlify (Free) | Static and AI-built sites | $0 | $0 (Personal plan is $9/mo) | Not needed on free |
The pattern is clear. SiteGround StartUp renews at 6 times its intro price. Hostinger Premium renews at about 4.4 times. Namecheap Stellar renews at about 2 times. InterServer does not raise the price at all.
9 ways to cut your web hosting renewal price
1. Read the renewal price before you buy
Every big host shows two prices: the intro price and the “renews at” price. The renewal price is the one you will pay for most of your site’s life. So compare hosts by the renewal price, not the first-month price.
Here is a real example. Over one renewal year, Namecheap Stellar costs $44.88. Bluehost Starter costs $119.88 ($9.99 x 12). Hostinger Premium and DreamHost Launch cost $131.88 ($10.99 x 12). SiteGround StartUp costs $215.88 ($17.99 x 12).
Do this if: you have not bought hosting yet. Our guide to choosing web hosting walks you through the full check in 5 steps.
2. Lock in the longest term you are sure about
Intro prices usually depend on the term. Hostinger’s $2.49/mo Premium price needs a 48-month term. Bluehost’s $3.99/mo Starter price needs 36 months. A longer first term means more years at the low price before the jump.
But there is a catch. You pay the whole term up front, and most refunds end after 30 days. If you are not sure the site will last, a long term can waste money.
Do this if: your site is a real, long-term project, and you have already tested the host during the 30-day refund window.
3. Pick a host with a price lock
Some hosts promise that your price will not go up. InterServer is the best known one. Its site says: “The price you sign up for is your guaranteed price for the life of the account.” It also offers a 30-day money-back guarantee.
The trade-off: InterServer’s control panel and design feel more old-school than Hostinger or SiteGround. It is a better fit for people who care about steady costs more than a slick dashboard. You can see InterServer’s shared hosting here, and our InterServer 1 cent coupon post shows how to try the first month for $0.01.
Do this if: you hate surprise bills and want the same price every year.
4. Turn off add-ons you do not use
Checkout pages often pre-tick extras like paid backups, malware scanning, SEO tools or premium email. These renew too, and they add up fast. Many are also not refundable. For example, Bluehost’s terms say most add-ons, such as domains, are not covered by its 30-day refund.
Log in to your billing area 2 to 4 weeks before renewal. Look at every line item. Turn off auto-renew on anything you do not use. Free tools (like a backup plugin or free SSL from Let’s Encrypt) often do the same job.
Do this if: your renewal invoice is higher than the plan’s listed “renews at” price.
5. Ask support for a renewal discount
Hosts want to keep you. Before your renewal date, open a chat and ask politely: “My plan renews soon at the full price. Is there any discount or a longer term at a lower rate?” Some hosts will offer a coupon, an extra month or a cheaper multi-year renewal.
There is no promise here. Offers change by host and by account. But it takes 5 minutes, and the worst answer is “no.”
Do this if: you like your host and would rather not move.
6. Downgrade to the plan you actually need
Many people buy a bigger plan “just in case.” That choice hurts most at renewal. At SiteGround, GrowBig renews at $29.99/mo and StartUp renews at $17.99/mo. That is a $144 gap per year. At Namecheap, Stellar Plus renews at $68.88/yr and Stellar renews at $44.88/yr.
Check your real usage: how many sites, how much storage, how many visitors. If you run one small site, the entry plan is often enough. Our list of cheap web hosts for low traffic sites shows what a small site really needs.
Do this if: you use less than half of your plan’s limits.
7. Move your domain to a low-cost registrar
A “free domain” with hosting is usually free for year 1 only. After that, it renews at the host’s domain price, which can be higher than a registrar’s price. Cloudflare Registrar says it “does not mark up domain prices at all,” so you pay what the registry charges for registration and renewal.
Moving a domain is simple and keeps your site online if you do it right. Read our guide on how to transfer a domain name to a new registrar, and compare options in our best domain registrars list.
Do this if: your domain renews through your hosting company and you have never checked the price.
8. Move static or AI-built sites to a free platform
Not every site needs paid shared hosting. A landing page, a portfolio, docs, or a site built with an AI tool can often run on a modern deployment platform. Netlify’s Free plan costs $0 and includes custom domains with SSL, a global CDN, deploy previews and 300 credits per month. Its Personal plan costs $9 per month if you need more.
The limit: platforms like Netlify are built for static sites and modern frameworks. A classic WordPress site with a database still needs normal hosting.
Do this if: your site has no WordPress database and changes only when you push new code.
9. Switch hosts at renewal time
Intro prices are for new customers. So when your renewal is close, a new host can be cheaper than staying. For a small site, moving from SiteGround StartUp ($17.99/mo renewal) to Namecheap Stellar ($22.88 for the first year) saves a lot in year one.
If you are tired of the promo game, Cloudways is another path. Its cheapest DigitalOcean server costs $11 per month, billed hourly, with no long contract and a 3-day free trial. You pay the same each month, and you can scale up or down. See Cloudways plans here.
Plan the move about 2 weeks before renewal, so you have time to test. Our guide on moving to a new host without downtime covers the steps. If you want ideas for where to go, see our Hostinger alternatives and Bluehost alternatives lists.
Do this if: your host would not give you a discount and the renewal price is 3 or more times what you paid before.
How we picked these tips
We started with the costs site owners complain about most: renewal jumps, add-ons and domain fees. Then we opened the official pages of 10 hosting companies, registrars and platforms on October 28, 2026, and wrote down the intro price, term, renewal price and refund window. We only kept tips that save real money and that a beginner can do in under an hour. No company paid to be included, and affiliate links did not change the order.
Who should choose what
- You have not bought yet: compare renewal prices first (tip 1). Namecheap Stellar had the lowest renewal in our table at $44.88/yr.
- You want no surprise bills: pick a price-lock host like InterServer (tip 3).
- You love your current host: trim add-ons, downgrade and ask for a discount (tips 4, 5 and 6).
- Your site is static or AI-built: try Netlify’s $0 Free plan (tip 8).
- Your site is growing: look at Cloudways at $11/mo with no long contract (tip 9).
- Your renewal is 3x or more: switch hosts before the renewal date (tip 9).
FAQ
Why is my web hosting renewal price so high?
Hosts sell the first term at a big discount to win new customers, then renew at the regular price. In October 2026, SiteGround StartUp went from $2.99/mo to $17.99/mo, and Hostinger Premium went from $2.49/mo to $10.99/mo.
Can I get the intro price again when I renew?
Usually not at the same host, because intro prices are for new customers only. You can ask support for a discount, or move to a new host to get its intro price.
Which web host does not raise prices at renewal?
InterServer promises that the price you sign up for is your price for the life of the account. Cloudways also has no promo jump, because it bills the same hourly rate every month (from $11/mo).
Can I get a refund after my hosting auto-renews?
Often no. Most refund windows are 30 days from first sign-up, and some, like HostGator’s, say they do not cover renewals. Turn off auto-renew before the date if you plan to leave.
Is it worth paying for 3 or 4 years up front?
It is worth it only if you are sure the site will last that long. A 48-month Hostinger term keeps you at $2.49/mo for 4 years, but you pay it all at once.
Will moving hosts hurt my site?
Not if you plan it. Copy the site, test it on the new host, then change DNS, and keep the old plan active until the move is done.
Does my free domain renew for free?
No. A free domain with hosting is usually free for the first year only. After that it renews at the host’s regular domain price, so compare it with a low-cost registrar.
