[UPDATE: Posterous Site Closed Permanently]
Posterous is a simple blogging platform which is just 4 years old now. It is quite popular because of its simple way to share stuffs online. We also run our Slashsquare Status Blog on Posterous (now on Tumblr) and we love it completely.
You can also set up a custom domain name for Posterous site and make it look professional.
Posterous Blog URL: http://blogname.posterous.com
Custom Domain Name: http://blogname.com
Custom Domain Name For Posterous
Just follow these simple steps. In this procedure I’m using GoDaddy, the steps will be mostly common for all the leading domain registrars.
If you don’t have a custom domain name, you can register one easily at GoDaddy. Confused about selecting a good domain name? Here are some tips for that.
1. Login to your GoDaddy account and go to your required domain name’s DNS Manager. Now don’t be afraid you just want to change the A record (or CNAME record) for your domain.
2. Click “Add Record”
Here you have two things. If you want your domain name to be domainname.com then select Record Type as A (Host) and then enter @ for the Host Name and 184.106.20.102 for the IP Address.
Suppose if you want your domain name to be something like status.domainname.com or blog.domainname.com, then select Record Type as CNAME (Alias) and then enter status or blog for the Alias Name and custom.posterous.com for the Host Name.
Then hit “Save” or “OK”. That’s all.
Kindly remember it can take up to 24 hours for DNS changes to take effect. If your custom domain doesn’t begin working immediately, please wait at least 24 hours before troubleshooting DNS settings.
That’s all from GoDaddy, now head back to Posterous.
3. Go to Posterous and click Settings for your Space. Choose “Space Settings”.
and then go to “Custom Domains” and enter the required domain name there. Here we have entered “status.slashsquare.org”
And that’s all it is. You’ll get a message like “Your Space is currently linked to ‘domainname.com'”. Also note that it may can take 12-24 hours for your domain settings to propogate across the Internet.
We did the same procedure and our Slashsquare Status blog is now freely hosted on Posterous without any downtime.
