Ah, good question it is. People started debating whether Google has any kind of anti-porn algorithm or some kind of rule. Maybe because of the vulgar words used in the domain names? But Matt Cutts says it has nothing to do with those things. He says no matter how popular a porn website is, it will not be a criteria for getting a good PageRank (PR).
Porn Websites Suffer From Low PageRank? Why?
Okay, so Porn Websites suffer from Low PageRank? It is not actually. Because Google (or well, PageRank) looks at the total number of links and the *quality* of those links, they don’t really consider the popularity of that site. Even I was confused between “Popularity” and “Quality”. Just because a website is popular, it doesn’t mean it is a quality website, right?
After all, majority of porn sites have popups, scams, and irritating advertisements that are against Google’s quality website guidelines, and interestingly even they don’t care much about PageRank because they have appealing content that will get them billions of loyal visitors.
They can earn even without having good Alexa Rank and PageRank.
Matt Cutts Explaining Why Porn Websites Have Low PageRank
In this video Matt Cutts answers for a great question,
“What are the technical reasons porn sites have such low PageRank? None go over PR6. A lack of links from trusted sites? Rampant link exchanges with low quality sites? Penalties for affiliate links? Or is there a general penalty on the industry? “
Even though many people visit such sites daily they don’t think about linking them, except adult industry of course. So there is no such penalty for low PageRank, even though your domain name and server have adult content it won’t add much to this.
Now let me ask you a question, when was the last time you visited such a website to check their PageRank *alone*? Yesterday? 😛
